Background of the Study

Family-centered care (FCC) is an approach that recognizes the vital role of families in the healthcare and recovery of hospitalized children (WHO, 2024). It emphasizes collaboration between healthcare providers, patients, and families to ensure holistic treatment and improved health outcomes (Adegbite & Akinwunmi, 2023).

In Nigeria, hospitals are gradually integrating FCC models, but challenges such as healthcare provider resistance, inadequate hospital infrastructure, and cultural beliefs often hinder its full implementation (Ogunleye & Danjuma, 2024). Research has shown that FCC improves patient satisfaction, reduces hospitalization duration, and enhances emotional well-being (Bello et al., 2023).

This study examines the impact of FCC on the recovery of hospitalized children in Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the benefits of FCC, its adoption in Nigerian healthcare settings remains inconsistent due to resistance from healthcare workers, lack of training, and resource constraints (Muhammad & Olatunde, 2023). There is limited research on how FCC affects pediatric recovery rates in Sokoto State, making it necessary to evaluate its effectiveness.

This study seeks to determine the impact of FCC on hospitalized children's recovery and recommend strategies for enhancing its implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of family-centered care on pediatric recovery outcomes.
  2. To identify challenges in implementing family-centered care in Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving family-centered care practices.

Research Questions

  1. How does family-centered care influence recovery rates in hospitalized children?
  2. What are the challenges associated with implementing family-centered care?
  3. What strategies can improve family-centered care practices in pediatric hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family-centered care significantly improves pediatric recovery outcomes.
  2. Implementation challenges hinder the effectiveness of family-centered care.
  3. Strengthening FCC practices enhances pediatric recovery rates.
